Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán has been called the most powerful drug trafficker in the world — and now the cartel kingpin has drawn the ire of the same U.S. special forces that took down Osama bin Laden.
Military sources told Mexico’s Proceso magazine that the Pentagon is sending Navy SEALs to hunt down Guzmán, who authorities believe is hiding in the mountains of western Mexico.
But a strike by U.S. forces on Mexican soil might not sit so well with the Mexican public or military, and the idea will still need to pass muster with the country’s president-elect, Enrique Peña Nieto.
“It took us 10 years to trap Osama bin Laden; we found him, and you know what happened,” Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told a Mexican official in February. “I don’t think the same thing will happen with Guzmán, the only thing I am suggesting is that we are persistent when we are close to evil that harms both countries, yours and ours.” (from Th Daily)
